Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the US. She has worked as an editor since the year 1995. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. It hosts video clips featuring commentary and analysis of gender representations in contemporary culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, critic of the media and award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. She is the creator and director-general of Feminist Frequency which is an education not-for-profit website which explores representations of women in pop culture narratives. She is committed to deconstructing stereotypes of women as they are portrayed in popular media. Furthermore, she works to raise awareness of online harassment directed at women and marginalized groups of people. Sarkeesian holds a bachelor's degree in the fields of social thought and political science from York University. She is also a highly-respected public speaking. Sarkeesian gave speeches to the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Feminist Frequency was created on the 9th of September 2009 by Sarkeesian, an undergraduate student at York University who had been interested in issues related to gender and feminism for a lengthy time. This ambitious woman planned to create an online series on gender representation in games, and was then the victim of an online harassment campaign. The woman was not stopped from the attack, and in fact it only reinforced her determination to be a media critic and feminist. Sarkeesian has been awarded many awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization that explores the representations of women in popular culture stories.
